It happened so quickly... Saturday, early afternoon, we were at my nephew's birthday party. Sweet A was a having a great time playing with her cousins... and by bedtime, my little one had a runny nose and a fever... Her first. I think she caught some bug from our Baby & Me class. She is always putting the toys in her mouth, as do all the other 16 kids, and it makes me cringe every time... It's not going to deter me... We're still going to go (once Sweet A is back to her sassy, non-contagious, self...). I'm not going to cocoon ourselves away like I did when she was first born... but that first fever is scary for a first time mom.
JG and I have been doing the tag team approach all weekend. We didn't get much sleep on Saturday night and he was right there by my side the whole time... We took turns trying to soothe an uncomfortable, tired, stuffed up, and feverish Sweet A... She would lay on his chest while I sang to her and stroked her hair... And something we discovered this weekend? My guy can suction a baby's nose with that bulb thing like nobody's business... He truly has a talent. It was his job all weekend. I Googled, tried to keep things in perspective, and made trips to our local homeopathic/natural foods store...
A few random thoughts about baby colds:
1. The cutesy, animal-shaped humidifiers that one registers for at mega-baby stores are more hassle than they're worth... Don't even bother. Go out and buy the no nonsense, no thrill, easy to clean, cool mist vaporizer.
2. I was surprised to find that with the exception of infant ibuprofen or acetaminophen, no other OTC symptom relief exists for infants. Everything is now for 6 years and older. We turned to a few homeopathic remedies and they seemed to help.
3. Propping up one end of the crib mattress with a phone book does wonders in easing baby's congestion... as long as baby doesn't flip in the other direction... and she will...
4. What did parents do before YouTube to learn how to use the bulb syringe thing?
5. Putting a bed in Sweet A's room, a suggestion of my mom's, was one of the best things we did in getting ready for baby. Thanks mom!
6. Before having a baby, the thought of someone sneezing on me, getting snot on my shoulder, and me wiping their snot off with my bare hands would have sent me into dry heaves... Today? Doesn't even phase me. FYI... We wash our hands like crazy 'round here...
7. Why does everything seem so much worse at night???
8. Babies are amazingly resilient, and forgiving... Sweet A is not a fan of the bulb syringe thing but after a minute of crying she is back to her sweet self... until she sees it in our hands again.
9. Arterial thermometers are the best invention ever... But don't forget to do a rectum temp here and there to make sure things are accurate.
10. Why does this stuff always happen on the weekends when the doctor's office is closed?
